View all newsThe Ontario Superior Court has held that premiums payable to insurance corporations for surety bonds fall within Ontario’s existing 3% insurer-level Insurance Premium Tax.
In Aviva Insurance Company of Canada v Minister of Finance, the Court rejected Aviva’s argument that surety bonds were not “contracts of insurance” for these purposes.
The ruling concerns the insurer-level IPT and does not change Ontario’s separate Retail Sales Tax exemption for surety.
HMRC has withdrawn its previous administrative treatment allowing buildings and contents risks relating to UK-based embassies to be treated as located outside the United Kingdom.
Under revised Notice IPT1, published on 31 July 2026, these risks are now treated as UK-located and liable to Insurance Premium Tax from 1 August 2026.
Contracts entered into before 1 August 2026 retain their existing IPT treatment until renewal. Contracts entered into or renewed from 1 August 2026 should follow the new HMRC position.
The French Government has confirmed that the FGTI contribution will rise from €6.50 to €8.50 per contract for premiums falling due from 1 January 2027.
The increase was formalised by a publication in the Journal officiel on 30 July 2026.
This follows the previously confirmed change extending the contribution to general civil liability insurance from 1 January 2027.
